INTRODUCTION

This book was written to solve the problem of paucity of textbooks written by Nigerians on Engineering Geology for undergraduate and postgraduate students in Geology and related Engineering disciplines, especially in Nigeria. Besides, the book also clearly explains the scope of Engineering Geology which is not well known to many students and professionals, especially in the built environment.

The book showcases relevant aspects of the Geosciences that are useful in geotechnical, drilling, environmental and mining engineering. Soil and rock mechanics are also blended appropriately for preconstruction investigation for structures.

By and large, I have been able to explain that the difference between Engineering Geology, called Geological engineering in some countries, and Geotechnical Engineering is not as wide as many professionals believe.

The book will therefore be invaluable to both students and practitioners not only in Nigeria but also in other parts of the world.
