Professor Oladapo Gabriel Adeyemi Brief Profile

BRIEF PROFILE OF PROF Adeyemi, Gabriel Oladapo
Gabriel O. Adeyemi was Professor of Environmental and Engineering Geology at the University of Ibadan,
Ibadan, Nigeria. He has over the years made significant contributions to his fields of geology.
Prominent among his research activities is the use of percentage by volume (instead of the popularly used
percentage by weight) of stabilisers to improve geotechnical properties of lateritic soils. The stabilisers used
by him are lateritic soils of better geotechnical properties and termite reworked soils.
His method has proved to be easier and cheaper than the popular technique. He has also introduced the
determination of permeability in the evaluation of flexible highway sub-base and subgrade soils. This
approach has led to a reliable evaluation of soils for road construction. He has utilised statistical techniques to
determine which of the anthropogenic and geogenic factors has stronger influence on the chemical
composition of shallow groundwater.
He has also been actively involved, using state-of-the-art techniques in environmental impact assessment of
active land-fill sites, evaluation of naturally occurring construction materials and engineering geological
studies of crystalline Basement complex rock, preconstruction investigations for structures such as buildings,
dams, roads, highways.
He has effectively combined surface geophysical surveys for preliminary evaluation of construction sites of
structures with geotechnical studies. This approach has been shown to give comprehensive preconstruction
investigations and hence prevention of collapse of structures.
His research activities have resulted in successful supervision of many Bachelor of Science and Masters of
Science projects and 16 Doctor of Philosophy theses.
He has also authored a book on Engineering Geology.
His citations as on 21 July 2025 are 844 with an h-index of 17.
Administratively, he was Head of Department of Earth Sciences, Ogun State University, Acting Head of
Geology Department, and Director of General Studies both at the University of Ibadan.
